Wild vs. Farmed, Which is Better?
There is a lot of conflicting information about whether you should choose wild or farmed fish. If you are like us, you only want the facts, so lets get to it! We eat fish for its nutritional benefits and great taste. Wild fish get most of their nutrients and flavor from the food they consume, namely zooplankton and small, wild fish. Farmed fish are often fed poor quality food to keep costs low and are sometimes fed antibiotics and dyes to reduce disease and brighten their color. Wild seafood spend their life swimming thousands of miles through oceans and rivers, while farmed fish spend most of their life living in a fish pen. At the end of the day you are what you eat, so which would you rather be?
Fresh vs. Flash Frozen, Which is Best?
When buying seafood, βfreshβ is not always as great as it sounds. Fresh fish is considered premium quality if it is consumed within 9 days of being caught. Considering the distant fishing grounds, time at sea, and final transport to the retailer β most βfreshβ fish is at or past the 9-day mark by the time it reaches your plate.
Β The first 24 hours is the ideal time to consume a fish. That is when it has the most optimal taste, texture, and nutrient content. With every passing day thereafter, these important qualities begin to degrade. Our βflash frozenβ fish is frozen within 24 hours of being caught;Β so, once thawed, it has the same premium quality as a fish that was just pulled from the sea.
When deciding between βfreshβ and βflash frozenβ make sure to ask when the fish was caught, and choose flash frozen if the fish is beyond its prime or if you are unsure.
